A psychologist has a doctoral degree (Ph.D. or Psy.D.) and is trained to assess, diagnose, and treat mental health disorders, often using psychological testing. A counselor typically has a master's degree and focuses on providing support and guidance for personal, emotional, or relationship challenges.

Counseling provides a safe space to explore your thoughts and feelings, identify underlying issues, and develop strategies to cope with stress, anxiety, depression or whatever struggles and the obstacles or getting in the way of life you want to live. It can help you build resilience, improve relationships, and achieve personal growth.

Your first session is an opportunity to discuss your concerns and goals. The therapist will ask questions about your history and current challenges to understand your needs. Together, you’ll create a plan for moving forward.

The number of sessions varies depending on your goals and the nature of your challenges. Some clients see beginning progress in 6–8 sessions. However, for many exploring, making connection to past experiences and integrating the tools can take.

Yes, counseling is confidential. Therapists are bound by ethical guidelines to keep your information private. However, there are exceptions, such as if there’s a risk of harm to yourself or others or legal requirements.
